I think the Federation's founders saw a rich vein of inspiration in everything awful about all pre-Atomic cultures. BTW, I don't think that fascism is necessarily French/Italian/German etc.--rather I would say that the
impulse
to tyranny is everywhere in humanity, and that those who fight tyranny externally always have to battle the impulse within themselves.
I'm stuck between twelve hour shifts at the moment with no time to post at length, but I would say that there is far more to fascism than a simple impulse to tyranny.
