Well, yes. I agree with you completely. Which is why I took exception to the beginning of this entire conversation where people were being told that they didn't have the right to insert "humorous" or "trivial" comments into the middle of a serious thread. Which is also why your diversion of the real topic is rather strange.
I also pointed out (as did other posters) that those people who truly wanted to have a "private conversation in the corner" should not expect to be able to do so on a list several hundred strong... and that their only options therefore are to a) live with the fact that their threads are not sacrosanct and people will respond in the tone and manner in which they wish or b) have a PRIVATE conversation rather than posting in front of the entire list or c) start their own list with rules that suit them better. Those are really the only options I can see. Because, frankly, even if some of us (like Betty has graciously done) agree that subject lines will be changed, etc., etc., a mailing list is in constant flux and the agreement will never stick. You're never going to get all the members of the list to comply *unless it is a rule of the list*. Why continue to upset yourself (and other members of the list) by making an issue of it? You have options. Pick one.
