But Buffy and Angel are very fannish (or at least very fanned, if that's a word) and they are outright soap operas--it's very much assumed that viewers will be aware of detailed past events.
About which there is some complaint in Buffydom. There are a lot of fans who preferred it when Buffy stories stood alone, and the development of the season arcs was all done 'beneath the radar', so to speak.
