Hah, and did anybody catch that programme on the Beeb a couple of years back where they showed a couple getting married dressed as the Doctor and Romana, with all of their friends in sci-fi costume? You can guess that this was not presented as a fun and unusual way for an imaginative duo to celebrate their hobby and relationship at the same time, but as a pack of sad people taking it all far too seriously.
Three years ago, the Oxford Uni Doctor Who Society (brief plug: if you're in the Oxford region, do drop us a line-- we also show B7, The Prisoner and many other things...) received a letter from an independent production company asking if we would like to be interviewed for a new documentary on sci-fi fans. One committee member timidly suggested that this might raise our profile. He was promptly shouted down by everyone else, who all had scary stories about the way earlier documentaries on sci-fi fans had made us look...
