I think that if fanzines were CAPABLE of making substantial profits then the studios would be producing them themselves. And they would have done it a long time ago. As it is, they've finally gotten a clue that tie-in novels often do well *and* that fanzines don't even tend to cut into that market.
Frankly, if the fanzines were highly profitable and the studios wanted to publish them, it would be a great boon to all aspiring fan writers and artists who would finally get paid for their hard work. If it hasn't happened by now, I don't think it's going to! Of course, there are a few rare exceptions, like Karen River, who got the contract to do the cover of Paul Darrow's Avon book.
