If you aren't interested in the Tripod thing, skip this mail. But it looks like they weren't targeting fanfic after all. Here's a forward from another list. ----- Forwarded message from Senfic Admin Account <riley(a)trickster.org> ----- Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 11:58:27 -0500 (EST) Inside scoop from Derek Bruneau, director of engineering and personal publishing at Tripod: "What's happened is that a technical glitch caused a bunch of sites to be removed accidentally. They're being restored today. Believe me, it wasn't targeted at anyone's site in particular. Lots of different sites [were swept] --including many of our favorites. It was just a really bad bug. Small bug, big effect. we're working as quickly as we can to get everyone's site back online. We know how terrible this is for members, so we apologize profusely. It's the last thing anyone needed right now." ----- End forwarded message ----- Other information recieved; it was apparently a bug in the software that automatically deletes offensive sites (like the ones that spam porn). Considering that some people were saying that the deletions had the pattern of someone following keywords, I can well imagine that someone messed up with a program like that. Probably forgot to put a trailing quote or something, and it started deleting every site with the word "the" in it (well, probably not the word "the" in it, but you can see the kind of thing...) Tripod: This Just In

Well, guys, it looks like lots of sites are getting the ax, whether they contain fan related content or not. The only thing they all have in common is that they are "free" sites. People with "paid" sites are not being deleted. The Wall Street Journal reports that Lycos, the company that owns Tripod and Angelfire (and a host of other domains) is going *bankrupt*. At this point, it looks like they're simply purging server space in a frantic attempt to cut costs. I know that I, for one, will be moving all of my photo sites off of Angelfire over the next week or so. This means that the Blakes 7 photo site will be moving again. Sigh. Stay tuned for the new URL when I know it. Does anyone know any good places to purchase domain space? Annie

Re Fiona's interesting post in response to Leah. If the frequency of the 'with him or be him' (him usually =Avon) posts on the Other List are anything to go by, an awful lot of female fans claim to identify with their preferred character, rather than lusting after him/her. Tavia (Apologies for the abysmal typing, I'm away from the office, and never did learn to touchtype properly on my laptop..)

Apparently Tripod is removing MORE than just fan pages. Someone mentioned on another list losing "3D Model" pages. I don't think anyone knows quite yet what is triggering these removals. If you have a Tripod page, better safe than sorry. I'd move it! Annie
