This leads me to the conclusion that during the extraction or reinstallation of Avon's mind some vital part must have been damaged irreversibly. Somewhere, in the distance, he heard the rumble of thunder. No, not thunder. Memory came flooding back. Albion was under attack. There'd been fighting, bombs. He remembered making his last stand against the Federation troops. Years ago, he'd helped free this world from them. Then, he'd stayed here, adopting it as his home, helping them rebuild, defending it during the chaos of the Galactic War, helping Albion carve out its niche in the new galaxy that had arisen in the war's aftermath. Finally, choosing to stay and fight to the last as the Federation rose from its ashes and began to reclaim its lost worlds. He remembered the troops breaking through, he had thrown a grenade, knowing it would bring the roof down on all of them. Then nothing. "Sleep, sleep, in thy sleep, Little sorrows sit and weep. Secret joys and secret smiles, Little pretty infant wiles," Del caught her stroking hand, stopping her. "What . . ." he croaked. He tried again, "What's . . . happened? Where . . . ?" "Dru, how's it going?" a man called. Grant looked and saw a Federation soldier. He jerked, trying to get up. The woman held him down, her grip like steel. "Sh, poppet," she said, "you'll hurt yourself. Rest." "Dru?" the man asked. Stroking Grant's hair, the woman said, "You're frightening the little lamb, Spike." She began to sing again. "Round and round the blackberry bush, the lamb is caught-" "I'm sure it is, Dru," the trooper said, "but how's he?" "Poor little lamb is tired, Spike. You woke him, and he was having such a good sleep, like a little angel." "I'm sure he was." The trooper crouched beside them. "How about it, Grant, feel up to moving?" Grant struggled uselessly against her grip. "You can shoot me, but don't expect me to help you." The trooper groaned. "Oh, get off the testosterone, mate. In case you didn't notice, Dru and I are on your side." "Are we, Spike?" the woman asked, childishly curious. "Poor little bird, I think his side's lost. So many dead people back there. Like when my angel found me. So many dead." She licked her lips. "Such a sad, sad waste." "We're on not on their side," the man said patiently, "just his." "So sad," the woman crooned, "so many gone. So lost, so pretty, so sad. And my tummy's all rumbly. Why are we on his side, Spike? Why not the one that's winning?" "Because they aren't paying us." He pulled off his helmet, revealing a nonregulation haircut bleached white. Too short to be a Space Rat's, Grant thought, but not a trooper, either. "Look, mate, we're here to get you out of this. Now, do you want to come or not? If you say yes, we'll help you out of here. If you say no, we'll hit you over the head and carry you out. So, make up your mind." "Yes," The man nodded curtly and pulled his helmet back on. "OK, Dru, let him up. Let's get moving. I'd like to get him out before sunrise." The woman laughed as if this was funny. She rose in a single, fluid motion, taking Grant up with her. He staggered uncertainly. The man caught him, slinging his arm across his shoulder and helping him along. The woman produced a large cape from somewhere, the kind a Federation official might wear, covering his Albion uniform. There was blood on it. "Who . . . ?" Grant tried to ask. "I'm Spike," his rescuer said, "and that's Drusilla. Just a friendly warning, mate, you can look but don't touch. Dru's feeling a might peckish. She might take your hand off." Grant ignored the joke, sticking to his question. "No, who sent you?" Spike laughed, "I know you won't believe this, mate, but you could say it was a friend of the family." "Family," Grant repeated, not knowing what he meant. "Mine, yours, somebody's. Look, throw in enough money and I'll call President Servalan Daddy.' I - Hey, Dru! Put down the mutoid serum! Dream

I had an interesting B7 dream last night which I thought I'd share with you. In this dream, Blake is sitting on a bench in a park. A wonderful detail is greyish, but completely compact sky, which looks like it's real, but at the same time I know it's just the roof top of a dome with something like artificial firmament. The 'narrator's voice' in my dream tells me Blake is still fighting the Federation and still facing impossible odds. He is approached by a bunch of kids. One of them comes closer and points a toy gun at him. The boy is one of those beautiful, angel or cupid-like kids with blond hair and big eyes, but the gun is exactly the same as the one Avon pointed at him in the final episode. Now I see the whole scene through Blake's eyes. He sees nothing but the face and the gun. He keeps telling himself it's just a child with a toy gun, but his whole body stiffens and he's on the verge of doing something irrational. My dream doesn't tell me if this is PGP Blake who remembers what Avon did to him, or PWB Blake who stiffens simply because he is aware of how children are brought up in a militant, ruthless spirit. (In the second part of my dream, Blake is playing football. Slightly boiling over about the waist, but oh what wonderful legs...) N.

I still have some 372 posts to read before I catch up, but still let me partake. I think about a month ago before this debate began, Mistral pointed out (quite correctly) that Meegat was a guardian of societal values. So why not assume that she was a priestess of a matriarchal religion, in which case Avon's role would be the role of the Sacred King. The Sacred King is worshipped, treated with greatest honour, but at the end of his rule he is sacrificed to the Mother Goddess. Avon doesn't exactly die, but he does get nearly killed by deadly radiation after he has performed his function. So why not represent this as a case of a man brutally misused by a woman? (Just for a change...) N.

After I wrote: <How about the fun we'd have if we substituted Piri for someone (Cally?)> Frances asked: <What fun was that then?> Well, for a start, we'd get the full - errrmmmmm - glory of her simpering and fluttering and whining 'poor-little-me' act, not only with Avon but with Fearless Leader (though now I think about it, it might even *work* with Gan!!! Oh joy ...). Jenna's enjoyment at having the only other woman on the ship a brainless, fingernails-on-blackboard-voiced twit would be wonderful too. Vila would of course want to run bets on [a] whether she was turfed out an airlock by Avon *or* Blake (or - in a rare display of total unity - both) and how long it would take before they did. But one would of course give the little dear some irreplacable skill (please DON'T ask me what) so that they had to put up with her for as long as possible ... (She could, of course, then turn into the almost as annoying gloat-until-the-Cavalry-get-here Cancer, I guess ...) Sometimes dies in a tragic (but usually heroic) manner before GP. Vila: Vila tends to be humorous under stress. He can generally only suffer as comedy relief. If I were going to do something nonfunny bad to him, I might let the master thief's hands get permanently broken (but I really doubt I could be that mean to him), taking away one of his few defenses against an unkind universe. Dayna: Nothing in any way resembling animals. She's perfectly free to start feeling guilty about the body count she's left behind her or intends to start adding to. Soolin: Survivor's guilt is always good. And I think, given what she's been through, the tough act is partly that - and must be underlined by the fear of meeting up with those who can crush it as effectively as the creeps who killed her family did. She's got to be afraid of powerlessness in a different way than Avon. Cally: Cally frequently gets stomped on in my stories. THere are lots of reasons, including how guilty Avon feels. Avon: Avon is convinced of his omniscience whenever it fails. If things go wrong when he's in charge, it's his fault. Hurt the people he doesn't admit are his friends, and he suffers beautifully.
