Vila and Bilbo

It seems to me Mr Restal and Mr Baggins have much in common - they're both 'little men' thrown into danger against their will, and yet they're great survivors. I've just leafed through The Hobbit and found Bilbo complaining about 'this wretched, tiresome, uncomfortable adventure'. They share love for food and drink and for safe, cosy places. (Although I was disappointed to find out that my memory was faulty. I was certain Bilbo got drunk with that wine in the cellars of the Wood-elves and he didn't!) Then, there's the curious fact that the dwarves enlist Bilbo for their Cause because they believe he's a master burglar. Besides, both Vilvo and Bilbo love toying with language and inventing rhymes and riddles - Bilbo's linguistic duel with Gollum is similar to Vila's with Ultraworld. It's also interesting to observe how they both struggle to overcome their selfishness and cowardice before they set out to help others, although Vila, unlike Bilbo, doesn't always succeed. N.

My knowledge of the military is pretty spotty beyond a certain amount of knowledge about the present day U.S., but officers (here) are trained beyond the basics of military academies and/or OCS before they are given the type of responsibility Arlen has on GP. So I don't even think Arlen is a fresh-faced newly commissioned officer. She's been around, and she's proven herself to be brave, reliable, resilient, and clever. (IMO) Carol

Presumably Travis knew about and accepted the usefulness of Death Squads (an idea they could have exploited a bit more IMO). Yes Avon tried to risk only himself in that episode, it had a personal flavour to it. It was between him and Blake and Servalan in hindsight. It's interesting because it departs from the normal mode of Avonness...self preservation, but then he also said he looked apon self interest as his great strength. Nevetheless he took risks in achieving his aims. A rumour of Blake was just too good a carrot to let slip without investigating. Again on Gauda Prime, it's a lot of trouble to trace a line through the pattern of infinity - 'cept if you have Orac. Leadership had it's draw backs and Blake had more charisma in that department, Avon wasn't entirely free to pursue his own interests even as new "leader" of the group. He merely inherited a new set of problems,most of which centred on group friction and justifying position and decision making. Dayna: "don't you get tired of always being right Avon?" Avon: "Just with the rest of you being wrong." or, Villa: "I don't follow you?" Avon: "Oh but you do and thats the problem!" and then classic B v A... Avon: "you were very lucky, they were almost ready to leave you this time. one more death, just one and they will." Blake: "then you had better be very careful, it would be ironic if it were yours." You're right, it was the ideal time to resurrect blakes legend with the Federation hot on their heals and no base to operate from, they were more vulnerable than ever. nathan, Nothings so difficult as a beginning/ In poesy, unless perhaps the end.
