pike -x module is a new build system.
Let's generate aclocal.m4 from pike, then you would not complain about that file, right?
Then we put the information in the current dynamic_module_makefile in lib/modules/Tools.pmod/Build.pmod or somthing similar.
Would that be better?
Note that nothing would really be differnt. But anal debian maintainers would probably be happier.
Personally I think it would be pointless to do all this work for nothing, though.

Perhaps it would be better to stop using autoconf entirely. Nobody seems to complain about Make.pl files, so perhaps that's the way to go.
I would be more than happy. There's pmk and numerous other systems of configuring software. pmk is maturing, so it might be an option in the near feature. But then, who will convert the current build system to a new standard? I would just hope that no pike would be necessary to generate the makefiles

I think this debate is really uninteresting and unnecessary. If the current build system is flexible enough to cope with Debian, then it is up to the debian maintainer to fix whatever needs to be fixed. If the current build system isn't flexible enough, then the source code and the CVS is available for the maintiner to fix whatever needs to be fixed.

My suggestion is most likely the easierst way to fix it so that it is flexible enough (by removing the files that people complain about entirely)

Well, but you usually gets somewhat destructive when annoyed ;-)
I so no reason to start deleting files just because some debian guy can't figure out how to install pike properly.
I mean, one doesn't have to be extremely anal. Look at the debian emacs package. Emacs by tradition have all sorts of random files in share/emacs/<version>/etc, the GNU manifesto, half a dozen icon bitmaps, a huge terminal decription file, etc. Some of the files are needed for emacs to work properly, some are jokes. These files aren't moved around to their "proper" places by the debian package. Since most are documentation, there's a link to that directory from /usr/share/doc/emacs/etc, and that's about all as far as I can see.

oh please! there is really no reason to insult each other. all you will gain is that pike will not run on debian at all. no debian user who is not already using pike will install it if it is not a debian package. (same goes for gentoo/redhat/mandrake) we need these packages if pike is to have any chance to raise out of obscurity. insulting the people that do the work is not going to help.
if there is a problem with pike running on debian then please help fix it, otherwise please stay out of this discussion.
Personally I really dislike debian, so it would not be a big loss for me, also, I don't really see all that much point in spreading the gospel to the uneducated. Pike will continue to exist and work just fine, even if I am the only one using it. :-)

Pike runs find on Debian if you use the distributions from pike.ida.liu.se instead of those from Debian.
