The downside of this is that A) inherit on a Java class doesn't work as expected B) you can't declare something as being of a particular Java class

what is the best way to determine the name of the function being run when in a c module? I'm using name = ID_FROM_INT(Pike_fp->current_object->prog, Pike_fp- >fun)->name; when calling non-constant functions, but that doesn't seem to work when the function being called was added using add_function_constant(). any suggestions? Bill

We have problem with the internal circular references within the Stdio.File objects. The problem is that not only are the objects as garbage until gc, but the associated file descriptors as well. This becomes a problem with massive amounts of connections. Our short term solution is to sprinkle the code with destruct(file->fd), but I would like to ask what can be done within Pike, both short term (if anything) and as long term solution.

This year's Pike Conference is rapidly approaching, but there's still time to attend or participate! A lot of exciting things have been happening in the Pike world since our last meeting two years ago. We've got some very interesting presentations, discussions and activities on tap, so if you're still deciding whether to attend, consider this a nudge in the direction of Riga. :) A free, in-depth Pike tutorial session will also run concurrently with the conference, so if you're new to Pike, or you'd like to brush up on your Pike coding skills, this is a perfect opportunity. method signatures in C modules

I've got a question regarding method signatures in C modules. I've noted that add_function_constant() and quick_add_function both take arguments that specify the method signature. However, the form of the specification is different for each. I'm wondering a) whether there's a significant difference in the way they work and b) what these signatures are used for in c language modules if the function code normally does the argument checking. I'm just wondering how much effort I need to put into signatures for methods in my auto-generated objective-c wrapper classes. Hopefully someone can enlighten me. :) Bill

Time for new stable

It's that time of year again. Enough fixes have amassed in the stable Pike to warrant a release. I still have some things on my list that needs to be fixed before a release, so there will be another week or two until I make the beta, but start updating the Changelog and take a look at your personal list of bugs to see if something needs to be included. Note: Unless something changes the win32 build will be without assembler optimizations because unprotect doesn't work. I will probably not spend any more time looking at it this year. I know mast was working on something for 7.7, but I don't know what the status of that is.

dynamically generated programs

I'm working on some code that generates c level programs dynamically, and was wondering if there's any way to include some data in the program definition. Right now, I'm adding a string constant that contains some text, and when an object is created from the class, I fill in the c level structures. That works, but it seems somewhat less efficient than if I were able to specify some data for the program. I looked at the definition for struct program, and didn't see anything obvious, but figured I'd ask the experts :) For those interested in the rationale, I'm working on adding inheritability to my objective c module. I've got a method that will generate a pike program for an objective c class, inspecting the class and creating stubs for each method in that class. Right now, I don't see any way to include a pointer to the class in the program definition, so I'm currently adding a constant that contains the class name. Then, when the object is instantiated, I look up the constant and then look up the class from the value of the constant. I'd like to cut down on the overhead of this operation, if possible. Thoughts? Bill

A hefty cleanse

So Ssleay, Pipe, Perl and Mird are gone from 7.7. Was decided upon through a very enlightened consensus, I'm sure. Could we outsiders get a rundown on the rationale behind this too? Don't they work at all? Commit messages talk about removing from "standard Pike". Are they going to appear somewhere else?

Re: threading and externally created threads

I finally had some time to look at this, and native_dispatch() had exactly what I was looking for. However, I found a problem (at least for me) in THREADS_ALLOW(): when you call this macro, it checks if threads are enabled and the number of threads. If there are more than one thread, it unlocks the interpreter. The problem is, if you only have one thread when you call THREADS_ALLOW(), the lock doesn't get released and any code running in "temporary pike external" threads will just sit there. I imagine that this is only a problem for things like the java bridge and my code, but thought I'd mention it in case there's a simple solution. I have taken to starting a thread that simply enters a sleep () loop before creating my external threads, and this works just fine. Anyone have a better solution?
