The Perl module has been dropped from Pike 7.7. Was it because it felt silly, because noone used it, or some other reason?
It was not compiled by default because it was not actively maintained.
So it was deleted because it wasn't compiled by default for a long time because of not being actively maintained? But did it work?
If noone uses it and reports bugs, I suppose it may be hard to know, and hard to motivate maintaining it. Anyway, someone reported a bug: http://bugs.debian.org/486066. Apparently PERL_SYS_INIT3() and PERL_SYS_TERM() should be called before and after everything else, respectively.
