Primarily Roxen through SSL.pmod. There's also various other code in Roxen that use the hash algorithms, randomness generators etc. So it's not exactly an unused module that just sits around collecting dust.

Well, I'm not sure exactly how much backwards compatibility is needed. But I'd really prefer to be able to be able to replace one or two classes at a time.
What is the compatibility tree, and how does it work?
Are there any testcases for any code that makes serious use of the crypto module, e.g. the SSL code?
