If we announce some fix date for a version bump, new version fork in the repository or release date for said version, and circumstances would have it we missed that deadline -- would the announce still be worth anything and better than how we did it this time?
yes, at least for those planning their work around dates. it gives them something to aim for and removes a reason to complain.
It's also a possibility that a missed release date (either too late or, should some consensus be reached that we are done a week before, early) would have us lose some certain amount of credibility.
only if these dates are announced publically. it should be enough to have them only for developers:
deadline for fixes is in 4 weeks. anyone have any critical changes that can not be made in that time?
after that the fork can be made and the release prepared.
Personally I'm really glad that we got a fork and release in the first place;
me too.
