It turns out that my fixes for objects being false weren't complete; there are many levels in the master.. The problem will probably go away when it's handled correctly in the whole call chain.

Yes. That's why I asked for a better one. Nobody submitted one though, so it will have to do for now.
A better fix would be to delay the cyclic check one step further, so that the resolver can return the placeholder object.
