I seems that running 'make documentation' triggers the dumping, a rather unfortunate side effect. Besides, what's the use of running Pike faster when it doesn't work proplerly?

It's to run Pike faster directly from the build tree. You don't get them by the normal build targets, but once you've dumped them they'll get updated by those targets. Run the target undump_modules to keep them from coming back.
