BTW I also saw that the configure script of the GL module use /usr/X11R6/lib as the path to search for the library while the linker used at the compilation doesn't (there is -L/usr/X11R6/lib) so the compilation can fail if your GL lives in /usr/X11R6/lib and /usr/X11R6/lib is not in your usual paths for searching for libraries.

Well, since you are on the development list you should know about or plans to include Nettle in the dists.
I wasn't speaking only for me but generally. The goal of a configure script is, among other, to warn the user if a needed dependency failed IIRC and point to ways to get the problem fixed.
