I'd like to do away with the global fd-to-backend mapping. One part of this is to use a better interface for multi-backend aware code (i.e. the files and Shuffler modules afaics). The other is to dumb down the old-style register-and-query-callbacks-through-fd's interface to only access the default backend (i.e. to how it was before multiple backends were introduced).
Opinions? Grubba? Is there more multi-backend aware code than the standard files module and Shuffler?
