It's fairly random weather the type field is accurate or not. Improving the type field accuracy is always a good thing as it gives many minor speed improvements, so please go ahead and fix allocate()

Good suggestion. Then it won't be slower in most common cases, providing the type field is accurate. I wonder how often it is, though. I found that allocate(X, Y) didn't set it, for instance.
