Actually, it's the maximum is 65535 identifiers. The number 65535 is used to represent nonexistant identifiers in many routines.

Hmmhmm. I agree that's not very graceful. "unsigned INT16" seems to agree with the 65536 identifiers I guessed.
Put such a test in the testsuite?
