I agree wholeheartedly. We don't have to put GMP/nettle into our cvs tree, but we could put the directories in there to be used IFF the system doesn't have a sufficiently new version already installed (i.e don't use the builtins unless needed).

That would work, but it would be rather irritating for the one running configure. I really think that gmp and nettle should be included in the source distribution. Neither is all that large, and the system provided versions can be used if any are found.
