Process.run

I just checked in a Process.run() in 7.7: http://pike.ida.liu.se/development/cvs/diff.xml?module=Pike&file=7.7/lib/mo… The rational for that is that I was once again reminded by a user this week that getting Process.create_process() or Process.Process right without some corner case blocking is hard. It's not obvious that if you bind pipes to booth stderr and stdout you have to take in to account that OS buffers are not limetless. Process.run() is a thin wrapper around Process.Process that collects stdout, stderr and exitcode and return them in a mapping. This could potentially result in huge strings, but will do what most users want and even already do when they call create_process() with both pipes bound. Something like this should be in 7.8, but I'm open to suggestions for other things that might be usefull to return in the mapping or for changing member names.

Subversion repository

I now have a rather complete conversion of the Pike repository to Subversion (some more copyfrom links could be added, but otherwise everything should be ok). It includes all checkins up to and including 2006-08-29, which when I'm writing this means "everything". The dump file is in pelix:/pike/home/marcus/pike_svn.dump.gz. My suggestion is that we create an accessible repository from this somewhere, to be able to work on tooling, and to check for glitches in the conversion. Once that is ready, I'll make a new conversion for the actual switch. Which means that everything checked into the temporary repository would be discarded. I have not converted projects/ or Pike/ulpc or Pike/extra_tests, as these are not branches of the main Pike development tree. Any opinions on whether to convert some or all of these, and in that case should they be in the same repository or a different one? In trying to convert the Pike CVS repositories to Subversion, I've come across something really odd. Looking at the ,v files in /pike/data/cvsroot/Pike/7.2/lib/modules/SSL.pmod, it seems that this module was created on 1997-03-13, and included in such tags as "pike_v0_5_release_47". Yet, there is no trace of this module under /pike/data/cvsroot/Pike/0.5 (or 0.6, or 7.0), under this name or any other as far as I can tell. Where are the missing ,v files? Did somebody miss some CVSROOT/modules magic when copying the repositories from RIS?

I see, it's that kind of generic glue code. An alternative is to look at the Java module which solves the same (or at least a very similar) problem.

The downside of this is that A) inherit on a Java class doesn't work as expected B) you can't declare something as being of a particular Java class

c modules and function names

what is the best way to determine the name of the function being run when in a c module? I'm using name = ID_FROM_INT(Pike_fp->current_object->prog, Pike_fp- >fun)->name; when calling non-constant functions, but that doesn't seem to work when the function being called was added using add_function_constant(). any suggestions? Bill

We have problem with the internal circular references within the Stdio.File objects. The problem is that not only are the objects as garbage until gc, but the associated file descriptors as well. This becomes a problem with massive amounts of connections. Our short term solution is to sprinkle the code with destruct(file->fd), but I would like to ask what can be done within Pike, both short term (if anything) and as long term solution.

This year's Pike Conference is rapidly approaching, but there's still time to attend or participate! A lot of exciting things have been happening in the Pike world since our last meeting two years ago. method signatures in C modules

I've got a question regarding method signatures in C modules. I've noted that add_function_constant() and quick_add_function both take arguments that specify the method signature. However, the form of the specification is different for each. I'm wondering a) whether there's a significant difference in the way they work and b) what these signatures are used for in c language modules if the function code normally does the argument checking. I'm just wondering how much effort I need to put into signatures for methods in my auto-generated objective-c wrapper classes. Hopefully someone can enlighten me. :) Bill

Time for new stable

It's that time of year again. Enough fixes have amassed in the stable Pike to warrant a release. I still have some things on my list that needs to be fixed before a release, so there will be another week or two until I make the beta, but start updating the Changelog and take a look at your personal list of bugs to see if something needs to be included. Note: Unless something changes the win32 build will be without assembler optimizations because unprotect doesn't work. I will probably not spend any more time looking at it this year. I know mast was working on something for 7.7, but I don't know what the status of that is.
