I never felt I was a hero -- until recently. Let me explain. When I courted (dated) my wife-to-be, my mother-in-law always made fun of me. She would say, "So Luu Huong, you no So Luu Huong! What you doing with a name like So Luu Huong?" When we were married, I always felt like I never measured up in her eyes. I provided a nice house and living for her daughter, but I always seemed to get that "look of disapproval" from her. A while back, she needed to move in with us and out of respect I told my wife she could. She loved helping us with the kids, teaching them our language and culture -- but she looked bored during the day. She would clean the kitchen several times a day. She would do ironing. She would iron everything -- she even put too much starch in my boxer shorts! Ouch! She just didn't seem very happy, even though I gave her everything -- or I thought I was providing her with everything. Sometimes she would just sit there and not say anything. Then I found a company that streams live Vietnamese T V stations over the Internet. It is as if she has found a new life! That was two weeks ago. Last night, I was reading the newspaper in the other room. Mom came in and said to me, "So Luu Huong, you my hero. Thanks for bringing the old country into our home." She smiled at me and I saw a glimmer in her eyes that I haven't seen in years - the years since she moved from the old country. I never thought I would see the day that I would find approval in my mother-in-law's eyes, let alone be a hero to her! She really enjoys the 9 different Vietnamese T V stations and reads the on-line program guide to pick out "her shows". Cảm ơn con đã đem quê hương vào nhà chúng ta. Bà ta mỉm cười với tôi và tôi nhìn thấy một tia lấp lánh trong ánh mắt bà ấy mà đã nhiều năm tôi không còn nhìn thấy Những năm từ khi bà rời khỏi đất nước.
