Thanks, for all the compilation tips, it saves me quite some time... :D .
Sorry if I have been a bit silent, but I have reality up to my neck.
I just removed the 2.6.5 patch and tried the 2.6.4 one. Still no luck.
/var/log/debug.log sure looks a lot like /var/log/messages - so much for
verbose debugging in usb-storage ;-P . Here's the relevant part...
Apr 23 22:48:58 bitsplitter kernel: drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new
driver usb-storage
Apr 23 22:48:58 bitsplitter kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.

Daniel, you said in a mail that I should compile usb-storage and *usbat02* as
modules, and load them before plugin in... I do compile usb-storage as a module
(and load it) but I am only able to include the Zio/usbat02 driver (does it
just mean that usbat02 is included in the usb-storage module?).
Just for completeness; here's my lsmod output:

Until further notice I will go usbat02-hunting on the net :)
