Setting socket options: so many, uhh, options!

Topic branch: rosuav/sockopt Per Lance's suggestion, I've made a generic setsockopt() function. It works only with integers, so it's not suitable for SO_LINGER, which therefore should stay the way it is (linger() takes a magic parameter of -1), but it works for any of the simple boolean options. As to shortcut functions, though, there are a few ways they can be done. 1) set_keepalive() always exists, even if SO_KEEPALIVE isn't available. If you call it when there's no SO_KEEPALIVE, it sets errno and returns failure. 2) set_nodelay() exists only if TCP_NODELAY is available. 3) setsockopt() itself is useless without the constants, and Stdio.TCP_NODELAY will exist only if TCP_NODELAY is available. So in a Pike script, using setsockopt() requires either has_index() run-time checks or #if compile-time checks for the options you want; set_keepalive's model works easily if you know that the Pike version you're targeting supports it; and set_nodelay's model lets you treat older Pikes and systems without that feature the same way. I'd rather make it as easy as possible on the Pike code. Which way makes more sense? ChrisA

debugger opcodes

I noticed that folks have been working on code generation lately. Any chance it might be possible to implement some of the opcodes required to get debugging working (step, break, etc)? I seem to recall someone indicating it wasn't a terribly difficult task, but it's clearly beyond my understanding of the problem. Bill

Fun with lfuns: `= and `[..]=

On the topic of lfuns: - Would an lfun of `[..]= be feasible and/or (un)desirable? - There obviously is no `= lfun. Is that technically challenging or hasn't there simply been no need to make it possible? I can imagine both operators to be useful in the context of String.Buffer: - `[..]= could replace a string in the middle of the buffer. - `= could be used as a shortcut to replace clear() and add(). -- Stephen.

Linux 3.13

I've upgraded to Linux 3.13.0-34 and now the async_tls_close_test doesn't work anymore when called with 0 1 as parameters (blocking without clean close). Any ideas what to look for?

IOBuffer vs. Buffer

The actual reason I beefed up Buffer a bit lately is *because* I need to do some protocol decoding of a byte stream. Now I see IOBuffer arrive. In order to avoid code bloat, wouldn't it be a better idea to integrate the functionality of IOBuffer into Buffer and just keep one? Or is the performance difference so strikingly great that this sounds like a bad idea? -- Stephen.

`<= vs `==

It appears that when Pike is presented with a comparison like: a<=b And given the availability of `< and `<= and `== operators, it insists on using `< first, and if that fails it uses `==. Instead of using merely `<= directly. Am I missing something here or is that a missed optimisation? -- Stephen.

Removal of 7.2 compat broke Stdio.read_file

Arne was in Linköping yesterday, so we had an impromptu development discussion about whatever was on peoples minds. Here are my notes for further discussion: * discussion ** remove constant evaluation timelimit for recursive compilation ** timezone compilation is slow ** Calendars documentation is incomprehensable ** Release 8.0 *** Not stable right now *** Does Bill want to be the release master? *** Backend fails on MacOS.
