Do i get it right the database is supposed to be incompatible with lysator's version?

You need a .wot file which contains the list of keys and signatures.
You can download the latest .wot file from
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jc/wotsap/wots2/latest.wot
and either name it ~/.wotsapdb or give the filename as the -w argument.
