We spoke briefly about what television series we could watch after Babylon 5.  I had recommended the original Space Battleship Yamato, which was a seminal Japanese animation from the 1970s.  Some of you may have seen the live-action reboot from a few years ago.  That was okay(-ish), but it tried to cram too much plot (an entire season's worth) into one movie, and too much had gotten lost trying to do that.  It was nowhere near as good as the original anime.  Not even close.

I have the original series, subtitled in English, on DVD, but the translation is poor.  It's watchable, but the poor quality translation is distracting.  Also, it has the rough 1970s style animation which may be unsatisfying for people used to much better quality.

It turns out that there is an _animated_ reboot of the original first season of the show currently underway in Japan.  It follows the old series fairly closely, retains much of the old music, has voice actors that sound like the original voice actors (!!!), and has much improved animation.  And someone is copying the show to youtube with English subtitles of good quality.

If anyone is interested in this show, the reboot may be the best option.  I'm including a link to the first episode.
