At 8:04:00 I plugged in the USB device, sans memory card.
At 8:05:00 I plugged in a 48MB memory card.
At 8:06:00 I unplugged the memory card
At 8:07:00 I unplugged the USB device
I also tried plugging in the USB device with the memory card already
present.
At 8:08:00 I plugged in the USB device with 48MB memory card
At some point in the post 8:08:00 period I remembered to try to 'touch
/dev/sda'. This did not work, and /dev/sda1 was not recognized.
