I've just had another play and figured it out : if you *don't* have an fstab 
entry for your usbat, it'll bring it up as "SCM USBAT-02" or Imagemate 
whatever. It then creates a /media/usbdisk directory and mounts it there with 
sensible options. This seems to be the best option for hal/dbus (i.e. wipe it 
out of your fstab and let it do the hard work).

It's not perfect but is very interesting...
